Charterhouse School, Surrey – a recent independent school search
During a recent independent school search we put the family in contact with Charterhouse School, Surrey. This is one of the great historic schools of England and among the most beautiful. Drawing on the heritage of the past, the school strives to stimulate independent inquiry and intellectual curiosity, to match physical fitness with a love of the arts. It also aims to foster a secure sense of individuality. The School was established in 1611 in a fourteenth century monastery on Charterouse Square in Smithfield London. It relocated to its current 250 acre site Godalming in June 1872. Pupils have always been referred to as Carthusians.
The school has around 800 pupils, all of whom are boarders, except for about 20 day pupils. Charterhouse accepts only boys at 13+, but has welcomed girls at 16+ for over forty years. There are currently almost 150 girls out of a total of 430 sixth formers. Girls and boys who join Charterhouse in the Sixth Form become full members of one of the twelve Houses. The girls spend the working day in their House and return to their Halls of Residence at the end of the evening.
Charterhouse aims to be an academically-focused, all-round school; every effort is made to teach according to pupils’ abilities, and to stretch the ablest well beyond the demands of the syllabus. Following the school motto: Deo Dante Dedi – ‘God having given, I gave’ the school aims to stretch and challenge all its pupils and hopes that they will leave the school having achieved the very best they are capable of, having found out what it is that they love and are good at, having learned to challenge themselves and to value other people.
Independent school search – Charterhouse School Curriculum
The curriculum follows the normal path to (I)GCSEs in Year 11 and Cambridge Pre-U or IB Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form. In 2015 94% of Cambridge Pre-U examinations taken were awarded Distinction or Merit grades, with 50 pupils achieving Distinctions (or their A level equivalent) in all subjects taken and 14 achieving the equivalent of A level A* grades in all their subjects. Results were strong too for the IB Diploma Programme with almost three-quarters of grades awarded either 6s or 7s and 43% of the cohort achieving 40 points or more (average score for Oxbridge entry).
A parent’s view: We will have spent 10 years at Charterhouse School, Surrey with our 3 sons who each went to a different boarding house. The school caters very well all types of children; our sons -of whom the youngest is now in the Lower Sixth- each had a very different but constructive experience. They have benefitted from both the truly impressive sporting facilities as well as the supportive staff.
