These are just a few of the questions we would put to you in our quest to find the best independent school for your child.
Our review of Kent Independent Schools begins with an update of Tonbridge School, Kent. We will also be revieing independent schools in Surrey, Sussex and London. Tonbridge School is a day and boarding school for boys in Tonbridge, Kent. It was founded in 1553 by Sir Andrew Judd. The school has entrance at 13+, 14+ and 16+. It is one of the leading boy’s schools in the country and is highly respected internationally. The school’s stated aims are “to provide a caring and enlightened environment in which the talents of each individual flourish. We encourage boys to be creative, tolerant and to strive for academic, sporting and cultural excellence.”
This ambition seems to be well realised with their most recent academic successes: the latest statistics show that 99.9% of all GCSE Year 11 boys in 2015 achieved A*-C up from a staggering 99.8% four years earlier. The boys sit International GCSEs in most subjects as the school believe the IGCSE provides a more appropriate challenge with a more stimulating style of examination at the end of the course. In A levels too the results for 2015 were outstanding with 100% pass rate and over a third of results were awarded A*, while three quarters of the grades were A or better. 97% of the boys achieved A*- C in all Advanced level subjets. The boys have the best opportunity to reach their chosen university – typically the school send over 20% to Oxbridge each year with the remainder also securing places at their first choice top universities. Support and guidance is also given for those wanting to apply to overseas universities.
The school has unsurpassed sports facilities both indoors and out and the quality of the facilities meant that Tonbridge was recognised as an Olympic training venue for London 2012 with the Australian Athletics team using Tonbridge School for their Olympic base in the run up to the London Olympics. Both music and drama are equally well served with outstanding provision for both.
Parents are invited in to enjoy all the school has to offer through the Parents Arts Society which offers art and theatre trips, lectures, evening classes and social events. Community work is also an important area for the school. Indeed, there is a vast array of outreach activities, with more than 100 boys going off campus on Wednesday afternoons to work in primary schools or with charities and community projects in and around the town. The boys are very active too in fundraising for charities, nationally, internationally and locally.
Tonbridge School is located in Tonbridge, Kent, an historic town well known for its culture and heritage. Close to Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells and surrounded by a host of pretty villages, Tonbridge has excellent rail links to London, particularly London Bridge and Cannon Street both of which are within a 50 minute communte.
